Corsica

Backpacking in the Mediterranean

June, 2006
by Elizabeth Waste

I spent most of summer 2006 working on some organic farms in Southern France and Corsica, a French Island in the Middle of the Mediterranean. These pictures are from a four-day backpacking interlude in Central Corsica. Despite its relatively small size (3,368 square miles), Corsica is home to a pretty significant mountain range and one of the hardest long-distance hiking trails in Europe, the GR 20. We spent a little time on this trail and some other beautiful and less well known trails to make a circle that started and ended in the city of Corte.

campsite Camp #1 at a bergerie, the summer residence of sheep, cows, horses, goats, etc. and their owner. Besides letting us camp in his field, we got some fresh bread and goat cheese for dinner.

La Breche de Capitellu Route down from the Breche La Breche de Capitellu - the highest point on the GR 20. The lakes are about 1000 feet below. Note the hailstorm in the background. This place is very exposed so, although it was really beautiful, we were ready to get down.

At right, the precarious route down from the Breche - one slip and we might have ended up in one of the lakes!

mountains The mountains of Central Corsica... somewhere behind them is the sea.

resting at lake The lake at Camp # 2 - the snowmelt felt good on tired feet.

beverage Down with Coke! Enjoying some local refreshment.
