I spent most of summer 2006 working on some organic farms in Southern France and Corsica, a French Island in the
Middle of the Mediterranean. These pictures are from a four-day backpacking interlude in Central Corsica. Despite
its relatively small size (3,368 square miles), Corsica is home to a pretty significant mountain range and one of
the hardest long-distance hiking trails in Europe, the GR 20. We spent a little time on this trail and some other
beautiful and less well known trails to make a circle that started and ended in the city of Corte.
The citadel of Corte, the ancient capital.
Hiking up the Tavignanu Valley.
Camp #1 at a bergerie, the summer residence of sheep, cows, horses, goats, etc. and their owner. Besides letting us camp in his field, we got some fresh bread and goat cheese for dinner.
La Breche de Capitellu - the highest point on the GR 20. The lakes are about 1000 feet below. Note the hailstorm in the background. This place is very exposed so, although it was really beautiful, we were ready to get down.
At right, the precarious route down from the Breche - one slip and we might have ended up in one of the lakes!
The mountains of Central Corsica... somewhere behind them is the sea.
The lake at Camp # 2 - the snowmelt felt good on tired feet.
Looking up the Restonica Valley on our way up to the Plateau d'Alzo.
