White Mountains, NH
Mt. Washington & Iron Mountain

September 10th - 12th, 2011

When hiking the tallest mountain in the northeast, teamwork is key! As we get started, the ever-industrious Andrew helps Helen secure her gear, and Helen and Jak spend a hiking buddy moment enjoying the fine September weekend weather.

Jak, Therese, & Helen in front of Tuckerman Ravine Our group arrived and set up camp Friday evening, with Saturday being our big day of hiking up Mt. Washington via Tuckerman Ravine, the most popular day hiking route to the summit. As the ravine's bowl comes into view, Jak, Therese, and Helen have already begun shedding their extra layers.
scenery steep trail The Presidential Range scenery was breathtaking, and as the trails got steeper we took advantage of our rest stops to pause and admire it.

Helen surveys how far we've hiked - and how far we have yet to hike - while Therese checks out a waterfall cascading down the ravine.

Some false summits teased up, but we're almost there! Helen approaches the top of the Tuckerman Ravine Trail.

Group on summit We made it! Our whole crew of five is reunited on the summit. With a chill wind and the exertion of climbing behind us, it was time to put our layers back on. But we were fortunate to have picked such a sunny, clear day for our adventure, and took some time to enjoy the magnificent views up on top of the world.

Eventually the time came to go back down, and Jak and Helen lead the way on the Lion Head Trail, which we chose for our descent. Below, Therese and Helen enjoy a moment in the sun along the trail.

TEXT Shadows were getting longer as we continued our descent, making it back to camp before nightfall. Following a night of rest we set out on Sunday for a shorter hike on Iron Mountain to round out our weekend in the Whites in style.
